2007 Indiana-Kentucky Synod Candidacy Retreat

Debra Farrington, Keynote Speaker

Our keynote speaker is Debra Farrington. Debra is the author of eight books of Christian spirituality, including Hearing with the Heart: Discerning God's Will for Your Life, on which her talks will be based. She leads retreats around the country, and is an online instructor in Christian spirituality for two seminaries.

She also writes for a variety of magazines including The Lutheran, and is a columnist for Lutheran Woman Today ("Let Us Pray" column).

Debra's two keynote presentations will be "Hearing with the Heart: Discernment as a Way of Life" and "Discerning God's Will at the Crossroads." She will also lead a workshop entitled, "Spiritual Practices for Living a Discerning Life."

Who is invited?

Anyone from the I-K Synod who is trying to figure out whether they are called to public ("rostered") ministry in the ELCA or who is already moving down that road…and their spouses or fiancés, too.

Why should you participate?

This annual retreat is a great time to:

  • become personally acquainted with the synod's candidacy committee in a relaxed setting,
  • make new acquaintances and renew old ones among the inquirers, applicants, and candidates of the synod,
  • receive important and helpful information about the candidacy process and ask questions about that process,
  • meet and get to know the bishop of the synod, Jim Stuck, Assistant to the Bishop and Director of Candidacy, Bill Gafkjen, and Region 6 Coordinator, Marilyn Smith,
  • worship together,
  • explore various aspects of candidacy and ministry in the ELCA,
  • participate in breakout sessions around important and interesting candidacy-related topics,
  • get away from whatever routine usually shapes your days and into a beautiful, comfortable, relaxing setting for a bit…

When is the retreat?
3:00 p.m. (EDT) Friday August 24 through 3:00 p.m. Saturday August 25, 2007

Where is the retreat?
Waycross Conference Center, near Morgantown, Indiana. This is in the northeast corner of Brown County, near our synod's Lutheran Hills Camp, about 75 miles south of Indianapolis.

Check out the web site: www.waycrosscamp.org. Directions to the Conference Center are also available via this web site.

What does the retreat cost?
Most of the cost of this retreat is borne by the synod's candidacy committee budget. Consequently, the cost per participant is only $50.00. This includes program, materials, a sleeping room, and meals (dinner Friday, breakfast and lunch Saturday).

A Couple of Special Opportunities

  • You may choose to arrive on Thursday, explore Brown County (www.browncounty.com) and/or Waycross itself, relax, work on Approval Essays, hike, or whatever - and stay at Waycross Thursday night. Cost for the extra night's stay is $50.00 and includes dinner Thursday evening and breakfast and lunch on Friday before the retreat begins.
  • A Myers-Briggs (www.myersbriggs.org) workshop will be offered Friday before the retreat begins. This workshop, "PERSONALITY TYPE & MINISTRY: Living Out Your Giftedness & Calling," is available only for candidates who have received positive entrance decisions (no matter how far along they are in the candidacy process). See the information sheet for details.
  • To participate in either of these special opportunities, please check the appropriate boxes on your registration form and include the additional fees with your retreat registration fee.
