Global Missions in the Indiana-Kentucky Synod:

You Can Be a Missionary!

Opportunities for mission are normally available in administrative and professional areas, community development, agriculture, evangelism, ministry, and pastoral areas, trades and support services, in addition to other fields of expertise.

Choices of Missionary Service:


Long Term Missionaries:
Persons who see international mission as a long term option are called with salary to serve companion churches for a minimum of 10-12 yrs. As of December 1997 there were 207 missionaries serving in 38 countries.


GM2 Missionaries:
Persons making a 2 yr commitment are sent to serve in more specialized positions with companion synods and receive a modest stipend. In December 1997, 39 short-term missionaries were serving in 13 countries.


ELCA Global Volunteers:
- Terms vary from 2 months to 2 yrs. Individuals serve in a wide variety of roles using various means of self-support. In December 1997, 90 volunteers in 27 countries.

ELCA young adults (ages 19-30):
this program provides a one-year service opportunity in leadership development, service, spiritual growth, global awareness and understanding. Up to 24 positions are available for 2004-05. Service begins mid-August.

International Teaching Opportunities:
We are a faith-based organization seeking committed Christians to serve in teaching ministries globally. Opportunities include teaching seminary theology, English as a Second Language; college-level subjects english, math, science, computers. and other grade-level subjects. Qualifications vary from no prior teaching experience to the need to have an advanced degree.

Health Care Opportunities:
We are a faith-based organization seeking committed Christians to serve in health ministries globally. The opportunities in this listing are in health care related fields, such as doctors, nurses and health specialists.


ELCA international missionary personnel:

  • Proclaim the Gospel through their work and personal lives
  • Serve through holistic ministries of health, education, evangelism, community development, and advocacy
  • Accompany Christians in their spiritual journey
  • Receive the gifts of colleagues and neighbors
