Bible Passage
First Sunday of Lent (Luke 4:1-13)
Today is the beginning of the new season of the church year. Today is the first Sunday of Lent. There are 5 Sundays in Lent and it ends on Easter Sunday when we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection from the dead. The color for Lent is purple. During Lent, learn about Jesus and his disciples and prepare ourselves to celebrate Easter.
In today’s gospel, we hear about how Jesus was tempted by the devil in desert for 40 days and nights.

After Jesus was baptized, he was led by God to the desert where he stayed for 40 days. Jesus did not have any food.
The devil came to Jesus and tried to tempt to Jesus. “Turn this stone into bread and you’ll have something to eat.” But Jesus remembered God’s words and said, “No. No one can live on food alone.”
The devil then took Jesus to a place where he could see all the kingdoms of thew world and said, “I will give you all of these, if you will turn away from God.” Jesus remembered God’s words and said, “No. Worship and serve only God.”
The devil tempted Jesus a third time. The devil tempted Jesus to jump off the roof of the temple saying, “If you are God’s Son, jump and God will send angels to catch you and you won’t get hurt.” Jesus remembered God’s words and said, “No. Don’t test God.”
Although the devil tempted Jesus three times, Jesus knew that God was with him and so he said “No” each time. He knew God was with him and he could resist the temptations. God is always with us. When we are tempted, we can remember God is with us and ask God to help us do what is right.

- When is a time when you have been tempted?
- What do you do when someone wants you to do something wrong?
- How can you remember that God is always with you?
