Bible Passage
Second Sunday of Lent (Genesis 15:1-12, 17-18)

Today is the second Sunday of Lent.  There are 5 Sundays in Lent and it ends on Easter Sunday when we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection from the dead.  The color for Lent is purple.  During Lent, learn about Jesus and his disciples and prepare ourselves to celebrate Easter.

Today, we learn about a promise God made to Abraham.

Watch the video to find out what happened:

Abraham and Sarah wanted to have a baby very badly, but they had not.    They were already the age of grandparents.  God promised Abraham and Sarah that they would have a son and that, in fact, they would have grandchildren and great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; that they would be the parents of a whole nation of people.  God took Abraham outside on a dark night and told him to look up at the stars.  He told Abraham to count them.  There were so many stars that Abraham couldn’t count them.  God said that’s how big Abraham and Sarah’s family would be!

God made a covenant with Abraham.  A covenant is a promise with God, a special promise where God keeps the promise and the person doesn’t have to do anything.  God just keeps the promise.

God also said that this big family would need a place to live, so God gave Abraham and Sarah the land where they were standing.

God kept the promise made to Abraham and Sarah and keeps promises to us.  During Lent, we remember that God promised to send Jesus, who died on the cross and then rose to new life, new life we share here and now and forever in heaven.  God keeps promises!

  • Have you ever tried to count the stars?
  • What is a promise you have made?
  • What is a promise that was made to you?

I’ll Fly Away.  Go Fish Guys.  (Go ahead and do the motions!)

The video below shows how to make simple stars.  The stars remind us of God’s promise to Abraham
