Today we hear about a time when Jesus encountered ten men who had a skin condition called leprosy.  At that time, there was no medicine to help people with leprosy.  When someone got it, they had to move away and live with other people who also had the condition so that it didn’t spread to those who didn’t.  That made people who had leprosy sad because they couldn’t do their jobs, they couldn’t see their families, they couldn’t go to church, they couldn’t go to school, they couldn’t do the things they were used to doing.

When these ten men with leprosy saw Jesus, they called out to him and asked him to heal them.  While no one at that time could heal someone from leprosy, Jesus could and Jesus did!  Jesus told them to go to the temple and show themselves to the priest who was the person who would say if they were healed…and if they were, they could go back to their families.  They ran to the temple because they were so excited.  Then, only one of them, came back to Jesus to say thank you to him for healing him.  Jesus wondered why the other 9 didn’t come back to say thank you.

Sometimes we forget to say thank you, too.  Sometimes it is when we are excited, like the men who were healed.  But too often we forget to say thank you to God because we forget that all that God has done for us.  We forget that God has created the world and each of us and everything else.   Saying thank you is important!  This week, let’s be sure to thank God for all the wonderful things God has done and continues to do in and through us and our world!

Discuss

Activity

Make thank you notes for some overlooked people in your community and then send them!  You might send them to your police department, fire department, teachers, the ER, or whoever you thinks needs to be thanked in your community.

Activity

Use band aids and write the names of people and things that need healing in our world.  Put the band aids on a piece of paper.  Pray for those people and things throughout this week.  Put the paper somewhere you will see it so you can pray every day this week.

Closing Prayer

Loving God, we thank you that all we have and all we are comes from you.  Help us to remember and be thankful always.  We pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.
