I will both lie down and sleep in peace; for you alone, O Lord, make me lie down
in safety. Psalm 4:8 (NRSV)

It seems there are many who have trouble sleeping, including myself. This is apparent as we look in the stores and see all the sleep aids available on the shelves. I recently found out that some of my grandchildren are taking sleep aids. I don’t remember ever having trouble sleeping when I was a child. However, I did not have the internet and cell phones constantly telling me all the bad things happening in the world. Now there are so many terrible things going on that cause us to worry and keep us up at night.

In verses 4 and 5 of this same Psalm, we are encouraged to trust in the Lord as we lay awake at night engulfed in worry. It is tempting to trust ourselves instead of the Lord. As we put all our worries in them Lord’s hand, then as the scriptures say; “I will both lie down and sleep in peace; for you alone, O Lord, make me lie down in safety.”

Prayer: Gracious God, please take all my troubling worries from me and let me sleep in peace,
knowing you are always watching over me.
