I-K Synod Fund for Leaders Scholarship

In 2010, the Indiana-Kentucky Synod established a scholarship endowment with the ELCA’s Fund for Leaders in Mission program. The current value of this endowment allows the Indiana-Kentucky Synod Candidacy Financial Aid Team to select one recipient annually for this scholarship, which has an award of approximately $1500.00.

Guidelines for this scholarship (from the ELCA Fund for Leaders)
The ELCA Fund for Leaders provides scholarships to candidates for rostered ministry (word and service or word and sacrament). The synod may choose to support its candidate in a way that best meets the goals of the synod using the following criteria:

  • Enrolled at one of the ELCA seminaries
  • Considered by the synod to be in good standing in the ELCA Candidacy process (have received a positive Entrance decision)
  • Are taking seminary courses in the upcoming year (will not be on internship)
  • Candidates may be either full- or part-time
  • Studying in a residential or non-residential program

If a student is already receiving a full-tuition scholarship, these funds may be used to cover costs beyond tuition, books and fees – such as room, board, insurance, etc. – but it will count as taxable income to the student.

Scholarships are awarded on a year-to-year basis, and candidates may apply more than once. Scholarship payments are made directly from the ELCA Fund for Leaders to the ELCA seminaries, where they are credited to the student’s account. Payments are made only twice a year – in early February and early September – and each payment represents half of the scholarship amount awarded.

Please contact Heather Apel for more information.  The deadline to apply is May 1 each year, unless otherwise stated.
