SUNDAY SCHOOL @ HOME – Fifth Sunday of Easter/May 10, 2020
Fifth Sunday of Easter/Mother’s Day
Bible Passage (for parents)
Jesus is Always with Us (John 14:1-14)
In our gospel for today, Jesus is talking to his friends and followers (the disciples) and he tells them not to let their hearts be sad, but to believe in him and in God. Jesus says that in God’s house there are many rooms and that Jesus prepares a place for each one of us. His friends say they don’t know the way to God’s house and Jesus tells them that he is the way, the truth, and the life.
Watch the story together:
- Tell about a time when you felt sad.
- Tell about a time when you felt alone.
- How does it help to know that Jesus is always with you?
I’ll Fly Away (sung by the Go Fish Guys). Sing along and do the motions!
Today is Mother’s Day. Have your child make a Mother’s Day card for mom or for another woman who makes a difference in their life. Maybe make several for several people. (Nearly 5 million children live in a household without their mother. Chances are you have a child who may have recently lost his or her mother, or is living in an arrangement without their mother. Be aware of these different situations. Help kids who have lost their mothers to remember and honor their mother. You can also recognize those people God puts in our lives to act as a mother figure. This day can be for them too!)
Remember that Jesus is always with us. He is with us, our moms, grandmas, aunts, sisters, women from church….everyone! Jesus promises that he prepares a place for us all in God’s house.

Jesus talks about preparing a place for us in God’s house where we will live with him forever in heaven. The earth is also God’s house as God created it and all that exists. Why not get outside together as a family and complete this nature scavenger hunt? https://iksynod.org/nature-scavenger-hunt/
Jesus’ friends were concerned because he was leaving them. But Jesus was going to God’s house where he prepares a place for each of us. Jesus is always with us. God loves us so much that God sent Jesus who died on the cross and rose to new life. We are given the gift of new life here and now and, later, forever in heaven with those we love.
- How can we share the Good News that Jesus is always with us?
- What things can remind us of Jesus being us? (People who love us, creation, music, hugs, etc.)
The season of Easter is 50 days, from Easter Sunday (April 12, 2020) to Pentecost (May 31, 2020). For your prayers today, consider beginning or continuing a paperchain where everyone in your house writes one thing they are grateful for. Do this until Pentecost.
Pray: God, you love us so much you sent your Son Jesus. Jesus is always with us. Help us remember that when our hearts are sad or we feel alone. Help us share the Good News with others that Jesus is with them. We thank you this day for all the women who love us. We thank you for the world you made, which is our home, until someday we join you in heaven. (We thank you for these things say the things written on the links of your paperchain or anything for which you are thankful). Amen
