Bible Passage
4th Sunday after Epiphany (1 Corinthians 13)

St. Paul wrote a letter to the people of the church in the city of Corinth.  That letter is found in the Bible as First Corinthians (because it was St Paul’s first letter to them).  The people of the church at Corinth were not getting along with one another very well.

St. Paul taught the people at the ancient church at Corinth that they needed to love one another.  St. Paul said that love is patient and kind.  He said that love doesn’t brag.  Love isn’t rude.  Love isn’t selfish.  Love tells the truth.  Love doesn’t give up and love never fails.

St. Paul reminded the people that everything we have and all the things we know could go away, but the one thing that will never go away is God’s love.  As we grow older we learn more and more about God’s love.  Someday, we will know all about God’s love…and that’s a good thing because God’s love never goes away!

St. Paul also reminded the people that God has given us faith, hope, and love, but the greatest of these is love.

God wants us to remember these things as well.  God loves us so much that God sent Jesus born as a baby in Bethlehem.  Jesus died on the cross and then because of the power of God’s love, Jesus rose to new life.  We belong to God and we will always live in God’s love.

Discuss

  • What is love like?  What is it not like?
  • When have you experienced God’s love?
  • When have you shared God’s love?
