Disasterville: Experiencing the Disaster Response Cycle Hands-On

Disasterville is an interactive, hands-on tabletop simulation that brings the disaster response cycle to life. Using small-scale model neighborhoods with buildings, figurines, and customizable markers, participants can simulate disasters of any kind—tornadoes, floods, or other emergencies—and explore the challenges communities face at every stage. From immediate emergency response, like triaging victims and coordinating medical care, to recovery and long-term rebuilding, participants gain a tangible sense of how resources are allocated, decisions are made, and local systems adapt in real time.

The activity is designed for a wide range of users, including Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT), Medical Reserve Corps (MRC), VOAD partners, local officials, emergency managers, professional responders, and the general public. By setting up scenarios with infrastructure damage, collapsed structures, and victim conditions, Disasterville allows participants to practice planning, coordination, and decision-making in a safe, low-pressure environment. It also includes components like an emergency operations center, medical treatment areas, and hospitals to highlight the interconnected roles of response teams and agencies.

Beyond technical training, Disasterville is a versatile educational tool. It supports preparedness program recruitment, encourages sponsor engagement, and serves as a knowledge refresher for volunteers and professionals alike. By stepping into the shoes of both responders and community members, participants gain a deeper appreciation of the complexities of disaster response, the importance of preparedness, and the impact of coordinated long-term recovery efforts.
