Supporting Our Neighbors After the Storm
The Indiana-Kentucky Synod maintains a dedicated disaster response team prepared to respond quickly and compassionately when disaster strikes within our synod. This team works in partnership with local congregations, relief organizations, and community leaders to assess needs, provide immediate assistance, and coordinate long-term recovery efforts. Grounded in faith and guided by a commitment to justice and care, the team serves as a vital connection between congregations and affected communities.
Indiana: Tornadoes Strike Bloomington and Linton
Recent tornadoes in Bloomington and Linton, Indiana, have caused significant damage. At least 25 homes have been destroyed, with more than 50 others severely impacted. Damage assessments are ongoing. In response, St. Thomas Lutheran Church has been working closely with the Community Organizations Active in Disaster (COAD) to provide recovery support. Their leadership and presence are offering hope in the midst of hardship.
Kentucky: Redeemer Lutheran Church Severely Damaged
On May 16, an F4 tornado with winds over 170 mph struck Somerset, Kentucky, leaving widespread destruction, including devastating damage to Redeemer Lutheran Church. For nearly 60 years, Redeemer has quietly carried out a ministry of service—housing the homeless, supporting food banks, and caring for the community.
The storm left the sanctuary in ruins, scattering pews and hurling the pulpit through the back wall. In response, the congregation and the local community have come together in solidarity. A GoFundMe page has been established to assist with rebuilding.

A Commitment to Long-Term Recovery
The synod’s disaster response team, led by Jayme Beneker, has been engaged from the earliest stages in both affected areas. Their work includes addressing both the immediate spiritual and physical needs of those impacted and planning for long-term recovery and care.
How to Support the Response
All contributions made to the synod’s disaster response efforts will be used to support those affected by these storms. This includes financial assistance, volunteer coordination, and the provision of essential resources for recovery.
