Prepare in a Year

Prepare in a Year: Building Individual Preparedness Together as a Congregation

Prepare in a Year is a simple, self-guided program designed to help individuals build meaningful disaster preparedness—one small step at a time. While disasters can feel overwhelming, preparedness doesn’t have to be. This program breaks readiness into 12 manageable monthly activities, each taking about one hour to complete. By focusing on steady progress rather than perfection, participants gain practical skills and confidence that support them in everyday disruptions, like power outages or car trouble, as well as larger disasters.

Although the focus is on individual preparedness, the program is designed to be worked through in community. Congregations can journey through Prepare in a Year together, using the provided materials to encourage discussion, mutual support, and shared learning. As individuals become better prepared, the entire congregation grows stronger—better able to care for one another and respond collectively when emergencies arise.

Preparedness is not a one-time task, but an ongoing process of learning, restocking, and staying connected. Prepare in a Year invites participants to view readiness as a sustainable habit rather than a checklist. By committing just one hour each month, individuals can become two weeks ready for disasters and take an important step toward personal resilience—strengthened by the power of community.
