As a new school year begins, backpacks across our Synod are being filled with notebooks, pencils and supplies.
At Messiah Lutheran Church in Brownsburg, they are also filled with something less visible but just as important: the prayers of an entire faith community.
For many years, Messiah has marked the beginning of the school year with a Backpack Blessing, a tradition that reminds children, students and adults alike that they never begin a new journey alone.
During the blessing, children are invited to bring their backpacks forward while the congregation gathers in prayer. Together, the community asks God's blessing over each student, their teachers and the year ahead. Every participant receives a special backpack tag, redesigned each year, as a reminder that their church family continues to pray for them long after they leave the sanctuary.
The invitation extends beyond students. Anyone beginning a new chapter, including adults starting a new job, is welcomed to come forward. Alongside backpacks, computer bags and work bags are blessed as members prepare to enter new classrooms, workplaces and opportunities.
The service reflects Messiah's belief that Christ is the foundation for every new beginning.
"We believe in starting our kids off to a new school year with Christ as the foundation," Hannah Demaree, Director of Youth Services said. "We want them to know that they are not alone. Even though some things might be scary or overwhelming, Jesus is with them, and their faith community is with them."
For many children, especially those heading to school for the very first time, the blessing becomes a milestone they eagerly anticipate. Carrying a backpack into worship and receiving a blessing helps mark the significance of the moment while offering reassurance that they are supported by both God and their congregation.
The tradition also serves as a visible commitment to nurturing faith in the next generation. As students head back into classrooms, Messiah sends them with more than school supplies. They are sent with encouragement, prayer and the confidence that Christ walks beside them wherever the school year leads.
