Inspiring Spirit/Empowering Spirit
I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. John 14:25-26 (New Revised Standard Version)
Thoughts matter! What I think determines how I act. I think that the driver who cut me off must have done it intentionally, and, just like that, I’m now angry. I’ve become another dangerous driver. Thankfully, the Holy Spirit reminds me of Jesus and Jesus’ teaching. Jesus taught about neighbor love. When that reminder sinks into my awareness, into my thoughts, other drivers become my neighbor. They can now become the object of neighbor love rather than a competitor for open highway space.
Thoughts matter. Immersing myself in Jesus’ teaching and all of scripture makes me more open to the Inspiring Spirit’s reminders. However, inappropriate thoughts also emerge. I can turn these thoughts over to God, increasing the chances that my actions become befitting of a disciple of Jesus. Does this always happen? No! While the Holy Spirit’s reminders don’t always get through or change my actions, the Empowering Spirit continues to do the work of constantly reminding me, empowering me.
Prayer: Come, Holy Spirit! Kindle in me the fire of Your love.
