Comforting Spirit

Then there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. When Zechariah saw him, he was terrified; and fear overwhelmed him. But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will name him John. You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He must never drink wine or strong drink; even before his birth he will be filled with the Holy Spirit.” Luke 1:11-15 (New Revised Standard Version)

One common struggle many people have is that of impatience. We tend to want what we want when we want it. In our fast-paced society, we are used to instant everything. A full meal can be microwaved in minutes, text messages can be sent worldwide in seconds, news travels the minute it happens, and for many of us, everything we want or need is only a short drive to the nearest Walmart.

I consider myself a Type A personality and tend to fall into the above category of person. For the most part, I like to be the one in control with all the answers. All of this fosters an environment of wanting everything when I want it.

But we all know the Lord does not work this way. Zechariah and Elizabeth are perfect examples of those who are patient with God and His timing. Their comfort didn’t come from getting what they wanted, but from the Holy Spirit, who supported them during their long wait. The Lord responded to their prayers according to Godly wisdom. He sent an angel to Zechariah to let him know he heard their prayers, and their faithfulness was rewarded with a son.

God’s Truth can only come forth at His time and not always when we want or expect it. I invite you to reflect upon your patience with God’s will and surrender your impatience today. Trust in Him and never cease praying

Prayer: Lord, help me sense your Comforting Spirit every day and keep me steadfast in prayer. Amen.
