In 2010, the Indiana-Kentucky Synod established a scholarship endowment with the ELCA’s Fund for Leaders in Mission program. The current value of this endowment allows the Indiana-Kentucky Synod Candidacy Financial Aid Team to select one recipient annually for this scholarship, which has an award of approximately $1300.00.
Guidelines for the scholarship (from the ELCA Fund for Leaders)
The ELCA Fund for Leaders provides scholarships to candidates for ordained and rostered lay ministry. The synod may choose to support its candidate in a way that best meets the goals of the synod using the following criteria:
- Enrolled at one of the ELCA seminaries
- Have a positive entrance decision through the ELCA Candidacy process
- Pursuing ordained ministry or rostered ministry in the ELCA
- Will not be on internship during the upcoming year
Students do not need to be full-time, and both distance learning and TEEM candidates are eligible. However, scholarships are for tuition only, and the amount awarded cannot be more than the amount of the student’s total tuition costs for the year. As such, students already receiving full-tuition support through the Churchwide ELCA Fund for Leaders scholarship program, or a seminary full-tuition scholarship, are not eligible for a synod scholarship.
Scholarships are awarded on a year-to-year basis, and candidates may apply more than once. Scholarship payments are made directly from the ELCA Fund for Leaders to the ELCA seminaries, where they are credited to the student’s account. Payments are made only twice a year – in early February and early September – and each payment represents half of the scholarship amount awarded.
Please contact Heather Apel for more information. The deadline to apply is April 30.
